3D Advertising Technologies

March 28th, 2012

Print advertising is slowly being replaced by more dynamic approaches to marketing. Today, three dimensional (3D) imaging has become a trend in advertising through Web3D. It is a form of technology that enables 3D graphics to be displayed on a website.

Three dimensional imaging works via stereoscopy, a technique used to create or enhance image depth by superimposing two slightly different versions of the same image. These two images, when combined in the brain, produce a third dimension perception known as 3D. Other techniques used in producing 3D are Lenticular and Parallax-barrier technology.

Three dimensional or 3D advertising began when Web3D’s second generation was launched in 2004. The second generation of Web3D uses Wildtangent and Viewpoint Mediaplayer as tools in creating TV and online advertisements. Some of the companies that first used 3D advertisement then were Nike, Coca-cola, Ford, and Toyota.

TV advertisements were possible because 3D content could work with 3D-capable TVs. Advertisers can repurpose 3D TV content for Web3D easily because the content is already made specifically for 3D-capable devices. Some additional work is only needed to use the same content on the Web.

Immense advances in technology have enabled people to enjoy 3D advertising imaging/3d advertising player. There are three leading technologies used in producing 3D, namely: WebGL, Silverlight, and Molehill. WebGL is a software library that uses HTML5 and is supported by recent versions of Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and Opera. Mobile devices such as Nokia N900 are compatible with WebGL. In addition, HTML5 is fast becoming a major platform used in mobile advertising.

Interactivity of advertising and user experience is extended through the use of Silverlight5, which is becoming popular in the Rich Internet Application or RIA. Using Silverlight in creating 3d advertising player/media, however, does not have many benefits compared with using WebGL and Flash. It seems to be a poorer choice because it only works on mobile phones running on Windows Phone 7 (WP7).

Flash remains to be the leading software solution for online 3d marketing. It is supported by most browsers and platforms except iOS. Nearly all Internet-enabled computer users have Flash Player installed in their browers. Flash Player’s developer, Adobe, has come up with a new 3D rendering model called Stage3D (codenamed “Molehill”). Molehill has the capability of rendering high definition videos and producing dynamic 3D images on most devices connected to the Internet.

Digital Signage: the Top 10 Pitfalls

March 28th, 2012

So, you’ve decided your business or institution will be well served by adding a new digital signage network. Now what?

Where to turn and what to do can be confusing, especially if you’re responsible for your organization’s communications or IT department, but don’t really know anything about a digital sign. While there are many good companies in business to help you achieve your goals, you can make the endeavor easier and far more successful if you avoid the problems many before you have encountered when rolling out and maintaining their digital signage networks.

Having worked with hundreds of customers on their digital signage needs, we’ve seen a lot of difficulties that could easily have been avoided -along with the associated delays and added expense- with a little knowledge up front. As the saying goes, forewarned is forearmed. So, keep these Top 10 Digital Signage Pitfalls in mind as you plan your new digital signage network to make the experience smooth and rewarding.

No. 1: Lack of a clear purpose

Someone in your organization, has read digital signage can make marketing messaging more effective. It can reach potential customers at the point of purchase, promote desired behavior, target different demographic groups associated with different times of the day, and do so many wonderful things.

But what exactly does your organization need to accomplish with digital signage? That’s the seminal question. Without clearly defining the purpose of a digital signage network, it is impossible to find success in any phase of its deployment or use.

Taking the time up front to define the expectations for the system and write them out on paper for the approval of key management will provide direction and focus effort on attainable goals. Struggling to fulfill a nebulous purpose for the digital signage network will rack up unnecessary expense and leave everyone connected with the project frustrated.

No. 2: Taking on digital signage as an IT project

“Digital signage network,” the very words sound IT oriented. While there’s a lot of IT technology involved with digital signage, taking on a digital signage network as an IT project is dangerous.

While highly skilled, the typical IT manager does not have the background nor the experience needed to roll out a successful digital signage network. There’s a powerful temptation on the part of IT managers to look at digital signage playback as if it were a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation. It isn’t.

PowerPoint does an excellent job at making business presentations, but how many TV stations rely on PowerPoint to create and playback the programs, commercials, news and promotions you see nightly? Exactly zero. With respect to playing back video, graphics, text and animation, layering multiple visual elements and building and maintaining a playout schedule, a digital signage network is much more like a TV station than a boardroom with a projector and a PowerPoint presentation. Keep that in mind if an IT manager volunteers to take on your organization’s digital signage project.

No. 3: Lack of content

Congratulations. You have a digital signage network. What are you going to display? Having a digital signage network without content is like having a newspaper without print. There’s just a whole lot of nothing and overwhelming sense of emptiness.

Communicating in some form must be part of the reason behind the decision to add a digital signage network. However, there is no communication without content. Fortunately, many organizations have existing resources to draw upon that can be repurposed as digital signage content. Logos, commercials, promotional video, print advertising, plans and drawings can all be reused in whole or part to communicate a message on a digital signage network.

Digital Advertising And The Solutions Available

March 24th, 2012

Digital advertising solutions for modern marketing.

Digital advertising and the systems use vary widely depending upon the digital advertising application and technology required, we will outline some basic digital advertising systems that will not break the bank.

What is digital advertising?

If you do not know already, digital advertising is the most modern way for advertising for any business, this has been growing quickly in America, Australia and Canada with Europe not far behind. Using the latest technology such as flat screen displays and a media player, basically the player accommodates all the advertisements on them locally and then displays them on the flat screen display. The adverts are displayed as either high definition slide shows or they can be a kind of animation, using both images and video to produce the advert, the high end digital advertising content is usually created in Flash to produce jaw dropping content.

Indoor digital advertising.

Digital advertising poster – this is the most cost effective solution as the screens used range from 20″ to 55″ and have a Flash drive media player built in, so all the content is stored on memory cards and to update them a flash drive can be plugged into the USB port and the original content can be over righten using the remote control that comes with the digital poster. Digital menu board – This is a unique way quick serve restaurants are displaying their menus, and due to a recent law being passed in the USA stating that all calorie information must be displayed so that consumers know how many calories they are consuming. These digital advertising player systems usually have the screen split into sections or zones with the main section showing the menu with special offers being displayed in slightly smaller zones to the side of the main advertising zone.

Outdoor digital advertising.

Usually when deploying an outdoor digital advertising solution the costs tend to increase, as special hardware is required. But now with the technology advancements from the screen manufacturers the advertising screens that are used indoors are reducing and now using a digital advertising enclosure company’s can deploy their own outdoor advertising solution at a fraction of the costs of an outdoor advertising screen. The same advertising player and media players can be used that are used for indoor advertising and by placing them inside an digital advertising enclosure they are then protected from the weather and vandalism.

LED Lighting as an Alternative Energy Source

March 23rd, 2012

There are many, many advantages to using LED lights as much as possible, especially when we want to save energy on our planet. The light created by LED light bulbs is much safer lighting than that of regular light bulbs - primarily because most light bulbs become very hot when used and can potentially cause fires. With LED lights you will never as much as burn your fingers touching a bulb, no matter how long it has been lit. However, LED lights can (and already do) serve a lot more purposes for the environment of which people are unaware.

LED lights are usually, and most effectively, designed in colors as opposed to translucent lights. As a matter of fact, some of the very first LED lights were designed for Christmas decorations etc. This is because people wanted safer lights to be sure there were no unfortunate accidents occurring due to hot lights and dry pine needles or outdoor leaves and so on during the holiday season. However, research, design and technology have been updated and are continuously being considered for other reasons.

LED lights are already being used for more purposes than you may think - and we should focus on incorporating LED lighting into even more of the lighting we use. The following are examples of some ways in which LED lighting has already been utilized in our economy:

o Christmas lights, as I mentioned before are available as LED lights. They have become more and more popular since the cost of LED lights lessened around the year 2002.

o Exit signs, traffic lights, for example, have been used with LED technology as opposed to other forms of lighting.

o Flashlights, toys and other small devices are using LED lights for the benefit of a LED light’s ability to continue to work longer than a light with regular bulbs. In other words, batteries actually perform better and last longer in merchandise that uses LED light.

o Elevator lcd push buttons.

o Status indicators: the status indicators on all kinds of equipment and technological merchandise have begun to use LED lighting.

o Motorcycles and bicycles already have LED lights for safer nighttime riding.

o Movement sensors.

o Glow lights.

o Thin lightweight displays at places such as subway stations, airports, trams, highway signs busses, and ferries have been using LED lighting for awhile. Nonetheless, I believe that we could use this option even more - LED lighting is a way to improve the environment, reduce electric risks, and eliminate the waste of energy.

o Light bars on emergency vehicles.

o Automotive high-mounted brake lights and truck and bus brake lights have begun to use LED lighting as well.

o Remote controls for stereos, DVD, television, and CD players often use infrared LED lights. It has actually been that way for some time now. People don’t often notice how often they have to change remote batteries - unless it seems like they have to be changed too frequently. Thus, you may not even notice that you own an LED remote until it finally does require a change of batteries. This happened to me and I realized how much more infrequently LED operated merchandise of all kinds allow batteries to last and last.

o Back lighting for elevator lcd televisions and displays frequently uses LED technology.

o New theatrical stage lighting equipment is being created in LED lighting for primary red - green - blue arrangements.

LED lights are usually, and most effectively, designed in colors as opposed to translucent lights. However, these pale to darkly colored lights are quite effective for many purposes. The wonderful idea of LED lighting is one to grasp onto when we reach out for alternative sources of light and energy. Some of the very first LED lights were designed for Christmas decorations, but it does not stop there. LED lights can prevent unfortunate home fires occurring due to the heat generated by burning light bulbs, but are not nearly as inexpensive as we would like just yet. However, research, design and technology have been updated and ways to improve the expenses of LED for more and more purposes are continuously being considered. I hope and predict that in the future the LED modifications we make will certainly make up for the cost in the long run. Because of the ability of LED lighting to last longer than virtually all other forms of regular lighting and because of the safety issues involved, the goal is that LED lighting will become more and more useful as time goes on.

Digital Signage - Understanding Screens

March 22nd, 2012

Flat screen technology has only been around a few years but already it has not only replaced its forerunner the CRT TV in our homes but also these thinner TV systems has paved the way for a revolution in out of home advertising.

But the demands on digital signage differ to those placed on home entertainment screens and while technologies like HD (High Definition) make quite a difference when you’re watching the latest Hollywood blockbuster, it will have little impact on an advertising campaign run on a HD digital signage screen.

However, there is a difference in the differing technologies used in modern flat screen TVs with advantages and disadvantages to them both. Generally when it comes to modern flat screen TVs they come in two varieties - the LCD (Liquid Crystal display) or plasma.

There was a time when there were quite sharp differences in the two technologies. Plasmas used to be brighter and have a better quality image, while LCD TVs used less power and were less susceptible to screen burn.

However, technology has advanced quite sharply and now the differences in the two technologies are negligible and more consideration should be given to protecting the screens to ensure the quality of image doesn’t diminish due to other factors.

Unlike home entertainment use, screens used in digital signage are often left exposed to direct sunlight or kept continually on. Heat build up and the direct glare of the sun can damage both LCD and plasma screens.

Some hd digital signage enclosures use clever technologies to ensure the screens of modern plasmas and LCD’s are protected. Air curtains are often used in some LCD enclosures, these blow a curtain of cool air across the screen preventing sun glare from causing hotspots. Anti-glare glass is also used extensively in LCD and plasma enclosures to ensure the screen is as readable as possible under direct glare.

When running a hd digital signage campaign, protecting the screen is crucial as the only outlay other than running costs is caused by replacing the screens. However, both running costs and protection may have become decidingly easier thanks to the development of LCD screens with LED backlights.

These use an array of light emitting diodes (LED) to generate the backlight of the TV. This not only uses a lot less power than conventional LCD technology but also they do not get as hot ensuring the screen costs less to run and will last longer

Summary of the types of Bus Advertising

March 19th, 2012

Before you have your advertising department prep decals or boards to affix to buses, you’ll need to know the materials that you’ll be working with. Plastic or metal are common surface types used in Bus Advertising, but decals aren’t installed the same way on both. Other factors are also important, including the weather in your area, the length of time your ad will run, and where the buses travel in your area. It’s important to find out if the buses will be running in an area that represents your target demographic. You’ll want to select an experienced ad designer if no one in your firm has this expertise, and find a printer and an installer if no one in your firm normally does this.

Make sure that your installer, whether he is in-house or contracted, knows how to install graphics on a bus, taxi or metro train, so you know the ad will stay up as long as you want it to. Installing a bus ad is not something to experiment on, so find an expert installer. Vinyl decals installed on bumpers or sides with rounded corners are especially difficult and time-consuming, and you want the job done correctly. For bus ads, this will generally involve the use of a scaffold so that the materials won’t stretch out or fold in on themselves. 3M makes a product called Scotchprint that is more expensive but well worth the extra cost, according to experienced bus/taxi lcd digital advertising designers.

Vinyl decals for bus ads are designed to work with almost any vehicle wrap you have in mind. They even have varying levels of stickiness, depending on how long your ad campaign will be run. One adhesive layer is designed to position your decal where you want it, and then outer layers provide the adhesion your ad will need. Once your installer has the decal in place on the bus side or rear, pressure and heat pop all the different adhesive layers, to help your decal stay on as long as you need it to.

You can also purchase vinyl decals with UV toners, which will keep your graphics from fading due to the sun. A UV over-lamination can protect your decal from peeling, cracking, rain and sun. It will also help your graphic withstand the rigors of bus washing.

Almost as important as installation of your decal is the ease with which it can be removed, once your ad campaign has run its course. You certainly don’t want the paint on the bus to begin peeling when you take your graphics off! That would mean additional, unexpected expense. The cheaper the adhesive you use, the more likely this damage is to occur, so be careful when you save money up-front with cheaper adhesives, because you may end up having to paint a bus when you’re done, if the adhesive pulls off the bus’ paint job.

Another ad type similar to bus/taxi lcd digital advertising is a branded vehicle. This type of Bus Advertising involves wrapping an entire vehicle in custom-designed graphics, so it is in effect a rolling sign. You can also advertise on what is referred to as a mobile billboard, which is generally painted on the side of a trailer or a truck. These are also effective ways to spend your advertising dollar. Any company that wishes to take their message on the road can benefit from bus ads, or other mobile media types. Bus ads are creative and unique, and an interesting way to target your audience with ads that catch their attention and generate interest in your products or services.
